PCO and NPC Mobilize Northern Mindanao Media Against Fake News and Illegal Cigarette Trade

NORTHERN MINDANAO — The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) and the National Press Club (NPC) are spearheading an initiative to engage media professionals in Northern Mindanao in the fight against fake news and illegal cigarette trade. This collaborative effort was emphasized during a seminar on Friday aimed at enhancing media integrity and economic security.

According to Philippines News Agency, Rohbert Ambros, Department Manager of the National Tobacco Administration, shed light on the severe issue of illegal cigarette trade in the region, noting that many seized products are either contraband or counterfeit. The proliferation of these illicit goods not only undermines the legal market but also results in significant tax revenue losses.

Philippine Information Agency Director General Jose Torres Jr., in a video message, underscored the critical role of the media in curbing the spread of misinformation and tackling illegal activities, such as cigarette smuggling. He highlighted the economic damage inflicted by the illegal cigarette trade, stressing the importance of truthful reporting in safeguarding public interest and economic stability.

PCO Assistant Secretary Rowena Otida called on journalists to uphold their duty to report accurately and responsibly, reminding them of the powerful impact their work has on society. “We are only as good as our last story, so we must strive to make it our best. Always remember, we carry the enormous social responsibility of informing the public accurately,” Otida emphasized.
