Philippines to Campaign for UN Security Council Seat at UNGA 79

NEW YORK CITY — The Philippines is set to intensify its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) during the upcoming 79th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79) next week.

According to Philippines News Agency, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo will lead the Philippine delegation at the high-level meetings in New York City from September 22 to 29. Manalo is tasked with presenting the Philippines’ statement during the UNGA General Debate, advocating for Manila’s bid based on its longstanding commitment to global peace and cooperation.

Secretary Manalo highlighted the Philippines’ efforts in aligning with international priorities, particularly in addressing complex global crises such as conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, and climate change. He noted that Manila is “making positive headway” in its campaign, bolstered by its “proven track record of being a dependable partner, pathfinder, and peacemaker in world affairs.”

The high-level week (HLW) will provide a platform for discussions on critical international issues, including climate change, health, global security, and the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Manalo will also participate in the Summit of the Future, an event aimed at building a new international consensus on multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow. He expressed anticipation for the adoption of the Pact for the Future at the summit, which seeks to revitalize multilateralism and promote global cooperation toward sustainable development and security.

Alongside the general debate and summit participation, Manalo will engage in bilateral meetings with key global leaders, including UN General Assembly President Philémon Yang and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The Philippines will also co-organize and co-host discussions on the High Seas Treaty and environmental violations, as well as a launch event for the Friends of the Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty, contributing to global efforts in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

Joining Manalo are multiple high-ranking officials, including Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman, and other prominent leaders from various government sectors, underlining the comprehensive approach the Philippines is taking toward its campaign and international relations.
