Tropical Depression Igme Triggers Weather Alerts in Northern Luzon

BATANES – The low pressure area previously identified east of extreme Northern Luzon has intensified into Tropical Depression Igme, prompting the issuance of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) #1 over Batanes, as it moves northwestward.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced the development in its 5 p.m. bulletin on Friday. Igme was located approximately 530 km east-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gusts up to 70 kph. The storm’s vast reach extends strong winds up to 720 km from its center, influencing a large area.

PAGASA highlighted that Igme is also enhancing the southwest monsoon, locally known as ‘habagat,’ which will continue to impact various parts of Luzon. This interaction is expected to produce strong to gale-force gusts across the Ilocos Region, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Zambales, and Bataan through Saturday.

Additionally, moderate to rough seas are anticipated along the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon, as well as the western seaboard of Southern Luzon, posing risks to maritime activities. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and consider securing vessels as conditions could be hazardous.

The weather bureau forecasts that Igme will proceed west-northwestward until Sunday morning, September 22, and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by the end of the day. Residents in affected areas are urged to stay informed on updates and prepare for potential impacts from the tropical depression.
