18 Political Aspirants Withdraw Candidacy in Bicol Region

LEGAZPI CITY: At least 18 aspirants for various elective positions in the Bicol region have withdrawn their certificates of candidacy (COCs), the regional office of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced. The withdrawals are set to impact the upcoming elections as the candidates step back from their political pursuits.

According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec 5 (Bicol Region) Director Maria Juana Valeza confirmed the withdrawals during an interview, stating that the act of filing a Statement of Withdrawal signifies the candidates’ decision to leave the race for the positions they initially sought. Valeza explained that the process requires personal submission of the withdrawal statement, although it can be facilitated through a special power of attorney if the candidate is unable to appear in person due to medical reasons, supported by a verified medical certificate. The Comelec’s law department will subsequently remove the names of these candidates from the official list.

The records reveal t
hat among those who withdrew, three were from Albay, five from Camarines Sur, one from Catanduanes, six from Masbate, and three from Sorsogon. While the specific reasons for each withdrawal remain undisclosed, Valeza mentioned that most candidates cited personal reasons in their statements.

Valeza emphasized the candidates’ right to file, cancel, or withdraw their COCs. She noted that no penalties are imposed on candidates for withdrawing unless there is a material misrepresentation or false statement in their COCs, which could lead to criminal charges for perjury. The withdrawal process remains available to candidates up until election day.
