31 NPA Rebels Surrender in Davao de Oro, Signaling Progress in Peace Efforts

Davao city: Thirty-one former members of the New People’s Army (NPA) have surrendered to military forces and were formally presented to local officials in Davao de Oro, marking a significant step forward in the region’s peace-building efforts.

According to Philippines News Agency, Brig. Gen. Ronnie Babac of the Army’s 1001st Brigade announced the surrender of 24 regular NPA members and seven Milisyang Bayan supporters on Wednesday. He commended the former rebels for choosing to abandon their armed struggle, emphasizing the government’s ongoing dedication to fostering peace and reconciliation.

Maj. Gen. Allan Hambala of the 10th Infantry Division echoed these sentiments, praising the decision of the former NPA members to seek a new path. “The road to peace is not an easy one, but leading the path of peace and reconciliation is a journey worth choosing,” Babac stated.

Davao de Oro Governor Dorothy Gonzaga reiterated the province’s commitment to assisting the former rebels as they reintegrate into society. Sh
e highlighted the support available through the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which offers livelihood assistance and other reintegration services. “We stand with you as you embark on this new journey. Let this day mark the beginning of a brighter and more hopeful future for you and all the people of Davao de Oro,” Gonzaga said.

This development is seen as a positive indication of ongoing efforts to stabilize the region and provide former insurgents with viable alternatives to armed conflict.
