91 Former NPA Supporters Reaffirm Loyalty to Philippine Government

BALER, Aurora — In a significant development, 91 individuals previously supportive of the New People’s Army (NPA) have officially renounced their backing for the group and pledged their allegiance to the Philippine government. This declaration occurred during a formal ceremony hosted by the Philippine Army’s 91st Infantry ‘Sinagtala’ Battalion.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lt. Col. Aries Quinto, acting commanding officer of the 91st IB, detailed that the ceremony took place at the Aurora Trading Center Covered Court on September 27. The former NPA supporters, originating from the towns of San Luis and Maria Aurora, participated in the symbolic act of burning a replica NPA flag, signifying their complete disavowal of the communist group. Quinto emphasized that this act represented the participants’ renewed commitment to the government, spurred by their disillusionment with what he described as the deceitful tactics of the NPA that disrupt community peace.

The event is a part of the broader governmental initiative known as the Whole of Nation Approach, or Executive Order 70, aimed at fostering lasting peace and facilitating the reintegration of former rebels into society. This approach involved coordination with local government units and various national agencies including the Department of the Interior and Local Government, National Intelligence Coordinating Agency, and others, demonstrating a unified effort to support these individuals’ transition.

In further remarks, Maria Aurora Mayor Ariel Bitong highlighted ongoing development projects in the area, aimed at improving local infrastructure and community facilities, signaling continued governmental support for the region. Additionally, a former rebel, referred to as Ka Danger, expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts in aiding former rebels to rebuild their lives, acknowledging the outreach to remote areas to promote the government’s rehabilitation initiatives.
