Aces Set for Rematch in Pivotal Game 4 of Korean Series

SEOUL: The Samsung Lions and Kia Tigers are preparing for a crucial Game 4 in the Korean Series, with both teams deploying their top pitchers for a second showdown. The Lions, fresh off a 4-2 victory, aim to level the series with homegrown ace Won Tae-in, while the Tigers will counter with American right-hander James Naile, seeking a 3-1 series lead.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the series has been marked by tight contests and a weather-related suspension in Game 1, which set the stage for this anticipated rematch. Won and Naile were the Game 1 starters, but play was halted in the sixth inning due to rain. Won had delivered five shutout innings on just 66 pitches, but was unable to resume when the game picked up two days later. Naile, who conceded a solo home run in his five innings, struck out six batters in his first appearance since recovering from a broken jaw injury.

The unexpected break in the schedule allowed both pitchers additional rest, enabling them to return for Game 4. Naile, who led the re
gular season with a 2.53 ERA, showcased his signature sweeper pitch to great effect against the Lions. Meanwhile, Won, who shared the league lead with 15 wins, effectively mixed changeups and sliders to keep hitters at bay.

Ahead of Friday’s Game 3, Naile expressed admiration for his counterpart, describing Won as a consistent and mature pitcher with a keen sense of the game. “He’s so consistent and mixes speeds as well as any young player I’ve ever seen,” Naile remarked. “He really knows what he’s doing. He’s very mature on the mound, so he’s fun to watch and he’s fun to compete against.”

The outcome of Game 4 will be pivotal, as the Tigers aim to gain a commanding lead before returning home to Gwangju for the series’ conclusion. Meanwhile, the Lions hope to become just the third team in Korea Baseball Organization history to overcome a 2-0 series deficit and capture the title.
