Additional Cases of Lumpy Skin Disease Confirmed in South Korea


SEOUL: South Korea has identified new instances of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle, increasing the total number of confirmed cases to 13 this year, as reported by the agriculture ministry on Friday. The detection of the latest case in Wonju, a city 86 kilometers east of Seoul, has prompted government action to contain the outbreak.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has implemented a 24-hour standstill order for personnel and vehicles associated with farms and related facilities in Wonju and six neighboring regions. This order will be in effect until 10:00 p.m. on Saturday. Earlier, separate cases were confirmed in Inje, located 118 kilometers east of Seoul, and in Dangjin, 80 kilometers south of the capital.

The government plans to deploy all available disinfection vehicles to prevent further spread of the disease. Lumpy skin disease is a highly contagious condition that affects cattle and buffalo, causing skin lesions, fever, and loss of appetite. It of
ten leads to reduced milk production and, in severe cases, death. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and other blood-feeding insects.
