MANILA – The Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) will focus on the utilization of artificial intelligence and space technology to bolster government initiatives aimed at mitigating disaster risks. According to Philippines News Agency, Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga emphasized the increasing importance of AI in enhancing resilience amidst frequent disasters. “As climate change intensifies disaster risks, integrating te
chnologies like AI and space-based systems into our DRR strategies is vital for a safer, more resilient future,” Yulo-Loyzaga stated in a press release on Tuesday. She highlighted that the APMCDRR serves as a crucial platform for collaboration on solutions that aim to protect both people and the environment.

The conference will explore how these advanced technologies can improve disaster prediction, preparedness, and response. It will also discuss the integration of modern technology with nature-based solutions and traditional practices to protect ecosystems from the impacts of climate change. Department of Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum and Professor Saini Yang from the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) are set to present on how AI, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), satellite technologies, and local and indigenous knowledge can enhance weather forecasts and risk assessments.

The APMCDRR, convened by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), aims to bring toget
her governments, partners, and communities to forge a path towards a safer and more resilient world.
