Antique Responds to Tropical Storm Bebinca with Evacuations and Class Suspensions

ANTIQUE—In response to the severe weather conditions brought by Tropical Storm Bebinca, the province of Antique has preemptively evacuated 545 families and suspended educational activities, as heavy to intense rainfall continues to impact the area.

According to the Philippines News Agency, Broderick Train, the Officer of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), reported that the evacuations began on Thursday afternoon across 18 local government units (LGUs) in the province. “The LGUs are now taking care of the evacuees, with the provincial government also providing augmentation,” said Train. Additionally, the suspension of classes was enacted as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of students and faculty.

The affected LGUs that have halted classes at all levels include Bugasong, Belison, Tobias Fornier, Laua-an, Pandan, Sebaste, Patnongon, Barbaza, Valderrama, and San Remigio. Others such as Hamtic, Sibalom, Culasi, Anini-y, Tibiao, Libertad, San Jose de Buenavista, and Caluya have suspended classes from pre-school through secondary levels due to the storm’s impact.

Compounding the weather challenges, a landslide occurred in Barangay Igbarawan, Patnongon, though the road remains partly passable. “The Antique Engineering District is currently conducting clearing operations,” Train added, noting the swift response to keep essential routes open.

In Sibalom, Mayor Gian Carlo Occeña detailed the evacuation of 100 families from vulnerable areas near rising rivers. “The LGU is providing food packs for those who have been evacuated and are temporarily staying in our evacuation centers,” Occeña stated, underscoring the community’s efforts to support affected residents.

The PDRRMO has urged the public to remain vigilant as the inclement weather is expected to persist through September 15, posing ongoing risks to the region.
