Army Drone Crashes Near Border Amid Surveillance Mission Following North Korea’s ICBM Launch.

SEOUL: A South Korean military drone, which was deployed on a surveillance mission following North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch last week, crashed near the border, military officials said Tuesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Israeli-built unmanned aerial vehicle, called Heron, went down near waters in Yangju, about 25 kilometers northeast of Seoul, on Saturday as it was returning to base after completing its surveillance mission, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

Communication with the drone was lost around 2 a.m. on Saturday, and it was retrieved by the military approximately 15 hours later. The drone was deployed to monitor the border area after the North test-fired a Hwasong-19 ICBM on Thursday.

The JCS said there were no casualties, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident. In a similar incident, another military drone crashed last week in Gimpo, west of Seoul.
