Ateneo, NU, and UP Dominate in UAAP Men’s Badminton Openers

MANILA — The UAAP Season 87 men’s badminton tournament saw Ateneo de Manila University, National University, and University of the Philippines each secure decisive 5-0 victories over their opponents at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall this Saturday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Ateneo, the defending champions, showcased a strong start against Adamson University. The team was led by skipper and Season 86 MVP Lyrden Laborte, who dominated Adamson’s Kyrik Roldan with scores of 21-10 and 21-7. Arthur Salvado Jr. also contributed to the victory by defeating Nathan Acedillo 21-17, 21-14. Laborte and rookie Robbie Ramos clinched a win in the first doubles match, while last season’s Rookie of the Year, Lance Vargas, closed the match with a win against Jhon Dema-ano.

Ateneo coach Kennie Asuncion commented on the team’s performance, noting the adjustment to a new venue and emphasizing the importance of vigilance in every match. “I’m happy that we started the season with good wins, considering we’re using a venue that we haven’t used for quite a while. The players are adjusting well,” Asuncion said.

Similarly, National University made quick work of De La Salle University with standout performances by Lanz Zafra and Season 85 MVP Solomon Padiz Jr. The University of the Philippines also left no room for doubt in its matchup against the University of Santo Tomas, mirroring the clean sweeps delivered by Ateneo and NU.

The wins set the stage for a highly anticipated clash between NU and UP, scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday at the same venue, promising another exciting round of matches as the teams vie for supremacy early in the season.
