Austal Philippines Engages in Talks with Coast Guard to Enhance Maritime Capabilities

Cebu—Austal Philippines, an Australian-owned shipbuilder based in Cebu, is currently in discussions with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to develop a new class of vessel designed to enhance the Philippines’ maritime capabilities.

According to the Philippines News Agency, Austal Philippines president Wayne Murray discussed the ongoing negotiations during a briefing at the Australian Ambassador’s residence in Makati City. Murray highlighted the company’s collaboration with the PCG to design a vessel superior to those operated by the China Coast Guard, particularly for operations in the West Philippine Sea, where the focus is on law enforcement rather than military engagement.

“There’s no firm contracts at the moment, but we’ve been working with their technical team to establish a vessel that would ideally surpass what the Chinese Coast Guard is doing,” Murray explained. He mentioned that the design would be based on a platform currently used by the Australian Coast Guard but customized to meet the specific needs of the PCG.

Murray also detailed the dual focus of the vessel’s capabilities, contrasting the Australian emphasis on border protection with the Philippine needs for logistical support to remote islands and fishing communities currently impeded by regional disputes.

In addition to maritime security vessels, Murray revealed that Austal is exploring innovative projects, including the development of hydrogen-powered and wind-powered vessels entirely constructed in the Philippines. These initiatives are part of Austal’s commitment to sustainable maritime solutions, with one particular design aimed at creating a 100 percent wind-powered cargo ship capable of transatlantic voyages.

“This vessel will be primarily wind-powered, utilizing motors only for maneuvers in port. It will feature solar panels, battery storage, and water generators to ensure it operates as a green vessel,” Murray stated, emphasizing the role of the Philippine design team in these cutting-edge projects.

Austal anticipates securing the contract with the Philippine government next year and continues to push the boundaries of traditional shipbuilding with its focus on renewable energy and advanced maritime technologies.
