Australia Reaffirms Commitment to Philippine Territorial Security Amid Historic Commemoration


MANILA: Australia has reiterated its commitment to supporting the Philippines as it strengthens its territorial defense measures, underscoring a longstanding partnership between the two nations. This reaffirmation was made by Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Hae Kyong Yu during the 80th Battle of Surigao Strait Commemoration.

According to Philippines News Agency, Ambassador Yu emphasized the 78-year diplomatic ties between Australia and the Philippines, highlighting the breadth of their defense cooperation. Australia’s largest defense cooperation program in Southeast Asia, which includes training, annual exercises, and scholarships for armed forces and coast guard officers, was noted as a key part of this relationship.

Recently, Australia expanded its support by providing communication equipment and water purifiers to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) stationed in Palawan. Additionally, more than 400 Filipino officers have participated in Law of the Sea courses offered by Australia to address the Phi
lippines’ maritime challenges. Yu underscored the importance of such practical support in safeguarding the Philippines’ sovereignty and territorial rights.

In a separate address, Surigao City Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao reflected on the heavy toll of war during the commemoration of the historic naval battle fought on October 25, 1944. The event was attended by dignitaries from the Philippines, United States, Australia, and Japan, as well as officials from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, and Philippine Coast Guard. Families and descendants of veterans were given special acknowledgment for their forebears’ heroism and sacrifices.

Japanese Deputy Chief of Mission Kenichi Matsuda shared a poignant personal connection, recalling his mother’s survival of the Nagasaki atomic bombing. This experience has fueled his commitment to fostering peace and trust between nations.
