Baguio City Allocates PHP 8 Million to Support Youth Athletes in Batang Pinoy Championship

BAGUIO CITY — The local government of Baguio City has sanctioned the disbursement of PHP 8.8 million to bolster the efforts of over 600 young athletes and their coaches as they strive to defend their championship title at the 2024 Batang Pinoy games scheduled for December in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

According to the Philippine News Agency, the funding is designated to cover comprehensive expenses for the participants, who are all under 15 years of age, competing in this national sports event. Jordan Habbiling, the city council’s information officer, detailed that the PHP 8.8 million budget will specifically address costs for airfare, ground transportation, meals, uniforms, insurance, and other necessities.

The allocation per delegate is set at PHP 14,285, reflecting a concerted effort by the city to maintain its competitive edge. This financial commitment represents an increase in both the number of participants and the budget from last year when 561 athletes represented Baguio City. During the 2023 Batang Pinoy in Metro Manila, Baguio athletes excelled, securing 82 gold, 52 silver, and 59 bronze medals, topping the medal tally.

The city also incentivizes medal winners with monetary rewards as stipulated in the local sports code, underscoring the administration’s dedication to fostering young talent and promoting sports as a vital component of youth development.
