SEOUL: Kim Soo-mi, a Korean veteran actress celebrated for her role as a sharp-tongued single mother in the acclaimed drama series “Country Diaries,” passed away from cardiac arrest at the age of 75. She was discovered unconscious at her residence by her son and subsequently pronounced dead at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Soo-mi commenced her illustrious acting career with MBC TV in 1971, eventually establishing herself as a prominent figure in Korean entertainment through her appearances in numerous TV series, films, and reality shows. Her breakthrough came with “Country Diaries,” where she vividly portrayed an elderly woman, a performance that garnered her the Grand Prize at the 1986 MBC Drama Awards.
Her acting legacy is further distinguished by her portrayal of larger-than-life characters, often embodying a beloved grandmother figure known for her candid humor and colorful expressions. This unique style endeared her to audiences across generations. Last year, she took
on a role in the comedy film “Marrying the Mafia: Returns,” depicting a gang family matriarch urging her daughter to marry.
Kim’s talents extended beyond acting into culinary entertainment, where she showcased her cooking skills on tvN’s “Mother’s Touch: Korean Side Dishes,” sharing traditional recipes and culinary wisdom.
