Bicol Region Grapples with Aftermath of Tropical Storm Kristine: 21 Dead, 9 Injured

Bicol region: The Bicol region of the Philippines is reeling from the severe impact of Tropical Storm Kristine, which has resulted in 21 fatalities and nine injuries, as reported by the Police Regional Office (PRO) 5. The devastation, marked by drowning incidents, landslides, and accidents from fallen trees, has prompted an urgent response from local authorities.

According to Philippines News Agency, the casualties were recorded across several areas, with Naga City suffering the highest toll with eight deaths. Other affected areas include Catanduanes with five fatalities, Albay with four, and one each in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Masbate, and Sorsogon. The PRO-5 Director, Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon, stated that the causes of these deaths were primarily due to drowning, landslides, and accidents involving slippery roofs and fallen trees.

In response to the disaster, the Reactionary Standby Support Force, Quick Response Team, and Search and Rescue Teams have been deployed to conduct rescue operations. These
efforts are concentrated in heavily affected areas such as Albay, Camarines Sur, and Naga City, with all available personnel engaged in aiding flooded communities.

PRO5 is also actively participating in relief operations to meet the immediate needs of those impacted by the storm. Brig. Gen. Dizon emphasized the ongoing commitment of emergency responders to assist residents and provide essential support. He called for continued vigilance and community service from responders, urging them to remain dedicated to saving lives and protecting properties amid the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
