Cable Thefts Concentrated in Greater Manila Area, Reports Globe

Manila—Telecommunications company Globe highlighted an alarming concentration of cable thefts in the Greater Manila Area (GMA), noting it as the hotspot for such incidents in the country during the first half of 2024.

According to the Philippines News Agency, Globe’s report detailed that there were, on average, 245 cable theft incidents per month across the nation, totaling 1,472 cases in the first six months. The majority of these incidents, 906, occurred in the GMA, significantly more than in other regions. The Visayas followed with 179 cases, Southern Luzon with 135, Northern Luzon with 125, and Mindanao with 119.

Joel Agustin, Globe’s head of service planning and engineering, stressed that cable theft not only disrupts internet connectivity but also hampers the company’s efforts to broaden its network coverage. “Each time a thief cuts even one cable for their own selfish motives, hundreds of our customers—individuals and businesses—are affected, including those engaged in the delivery of essential services. The impact is, thus, magnified,” Agustin stated.

Agustin urged the public to remain vigilant and report any incidents of cable theft to local authorities, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in addressing this issue. “By working together, Globe and the community can combat this problem and ensure continuous service for all,” he added.
