Camiguin QR Code System Enhances Tourism and Services Amid Privacy Concerns

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Camiguin Island has expanded its Quick Response (QR) registration policy to improve tourism services and streamline access to various accommodations.

According to Philippines News Agency, In a radio interview on Wednesday, Romualdo explained that the QR system, which was initially introduced for contact tracing during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been relaunched to register tourists visiting the island. The system is part of a broader effort to adopt data-driven governance, allowing for more effective planning and promotion of Camiguin’s tourism sector.

However, the QR system has faced legal challenges, with businessman Paul Rodriguez and several groups filing a petition in court, arguing that the mandatory registration infringes on privacy rights, especially for residents. Romualdo defended the inclusion of locals in the registration, stating that it helps segregate data on local and non-local tourists, which is essential for accurate demographic analysis.

In addition to the QR system, the Anti-Red Tape Authority has recognized the successful implementation of the Electronic Business One-Stop Shop (eBOSS) in Camiguin’s five municipalities. Under the Ease of Doing Business Law, eBOSS allows businesses to access all necessary services and information for registration through a single online portal, further simplifying the process for entrepreneurs in the province.
