Caraga Region Prepares for Tropical Storm Kristine with Emergency Measures


BUTUAN CITY: Local government units in the Caraga Region have activated emergency centers and suspended classes as part of precautionary measures in response to the approaching Tropical Storm Kristine. The region is currently under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1.

According to Philippines News Agency, the provinces of Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte, including Siargao and Bucas Grande Island, have been under TCWS No. 1 since Monday. In response to the impending storm, Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers issued an advisory on Tuesday, calling on mayors and school administrators to evaluate local conditions and suspend classes if needed. Residents in coastal areas and those susceptible to floods and landslides have been advised to take necessary precautions and stay informed about weather updates.

In Dinagat Islands, Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. implemented public safety protocols on Monday, leading to the suspension of classes from preschool to grade 12, as well as the Alternative L
earning System. This decision aims to protect students and ensure their safety. “To facilitate timely response and humanitarian assistance to affected sectors, response clusters are now activated,” Demerey stated in an interview.

Coast Guard stations in Surigao del Norte, Siargao Island, and Dinagat Islands have also taken preventive measures by temporarily suspending sea travel, citing unsafe conditions.
