Cholera Outbreak and Flooding Crisis Worsen in Sudan, Death Toll Surpasses 500

KHARTOUM—Sudan is grappling with a severe cholera outbreak and devastating floods, with the combined death toll rising sharply. Health authorities reported Monday that the country has seen 315 deaths due to cholera and 225 fatalities from recent flooding incidents, underlining a dual crisis that has strained the nation’s resources.

According to the Philippines News Agency, the Health Ministry of Sudan released new figures indicating a significant escalation in the cholera outbreak, with 266 new cases recorded, bringing the total to 9,533 since August, including 315 deaths. The outbreak was officially declared an epidemic on August 12. In a related crisis, the ministry detailed that flooding and heavy rains have been just as deadly, claiming 225 lives and injuring 889 others.

The floods have also caused widespread property damage, with more than 35,794 homes severely impacted and an additional 40,781 homes partially damaged since June. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Sunday that the severe weather has displaced over 178,000 people across 15 of Sudan’s 18 states.
