Devastated Pangasinan City Under State of Calamity Due to Severe Flooding


DAGUPAN CITY: The city government of Dagupan in Pangasinan has declared a state of calamity following the severe flooding and other impacts of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, internationally known as Trami. This decision was formalized on Friday after the Sangguniang Panlungsod, or Provincial Board, approved the declaration in a special session requested by Mayor Belen Fernandez.

According to Philippines News Agency, the declaration comes as a response to the significant damage caused by the storm, which has severely affected residents, their livelihoods, agriculture, and the infrastructure of the city. Mayor Fernandez communicated through her social media page that the decision was a necessary step to address the immediate needs of the community.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that 21 villages experienced flooding resulting from storm surges, while an additional 10 villages were inundated due to heavy rainfall combined with high tides. The adverse weather conditions led to
the evacuation of 660 families, comprising 2,020 individuals.

The storm has also inflicted financial damage, with losses in the agriculture and aquaculture sectors estimated at PHP34 million. The declaration of a state of calamity enables the local government to impose a price freeze for 90 days and access its calamity fund. Furthermore, residents and workers in Dagupan City may apply for calamity loans to mitigate their financial burdens.
