DOH Allocates P2 Million for Contraceptives in Negros Oriental

CEBU CITY – The Department of Health in Region 7 (DOH-7), also known as Central Visayas, has allocated PHP2 million for family planning commodities in Negros Oriental.

According to Philippines News Agency, Family Health Medical Coordinator of DOH-7, the allocation includes Progestin Sub-dermal Implant (PSI), a long-acting reversible contraceptive. Salang highlighted that the implant, effective for at least three years, was part of the shipment sent to the province last month. The PSI is inserted into the inner aspect of the arm and offers a cost-effective solution compared to local government procurement prices.

Salang led a team from the DOH-7 regional office in Cebu City to participate in the local Family Planning Month celebration in August. The event saw participation from over 100 health workers, local officials, and stakeholders. Dr. Liland Estacion, the chief of the Provincial Health Office, noted in a separate interview that the family planning commodities, including condoms and birth control pills, are provided for free, subject to supply availability.

The cost-effectiveness of DOH’s procurement strategy was emphasized by Salang, who stated that while one implant could cost between PHP2,000 to PHP4,000 if purchased by hospitals or local governments, the DOH secures them for PHP1,600 each.
