DOLE Announces Minimum Wage Hikes Across Various Regions in 2024

MANILA — Workers in regions outside of Metro Manila can anticipate a potential increase in their minimum daily wages within the year, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). This move follows the directive from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards (RTWPB) to reassess wage rates.

According to Philippines News Agency, during a recent episode of Malacañang Insider, the increase is set to occur as part of a nationwide review and adjustment of wage levels. “Sa madaling salita, lahat ng Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards sa loob ng taon na ito ay magkakaroon na ng karampatang action doon sa adjustment ng umiirial na minimum wage levels sa kani-kanilang rehiyon (In short, all the RTWPBs will have appropriate actions on the adjustments being implemented in their respective regions within the year),” stated Laguesma. The review process was initiated as part of the commitments made during the 22nd Labor Day celebration on May 1.

The recent wage increase in the National Capital Region, where the daily minimum wage was raised by PHP35 to PHP645, marks a precedent for similar adjustments across the country. Regions such as Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Central Visayas, and Soccsksargen have already begun their consultation processes in August. Other regions like Calabarzon, Ilocos Region, Western Visayas, and Zamboanga Peninsula are starting their reviews this month, with further regions scheduled for later in the year.

The consultations, crucial for addressing the concerns and issues within the labor sector, are part of DOLE’s broader commitment to improving service delivery and enhancing the employability of Filipino youth. Key initiatives include the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES), Government Internship Program, and JobStart, aimed at bolstering the skills and opportunities available to young workers.
