DPWH-Bicol Completes PHP49 Million Flood Control Project in Sorsogon

LEGAZPI CITY—A newly completed flood control project valued at PHP49 million by the Department of Public Works and Highways-Bicol (DPWH-5) is now providing substantial protection to the residents of Gubat, Sorsogon, against the ravages of seasonal floods. This initiative is particularly crucial for safeguarding the area during adverse weather conditions.

According to Philippines News Agency, DPWH-5 Regional Director Virgilio Eduarte highlighted that the 320-meter structure was specifically designed to shield the populous Barangay Tabi from the destructive overflow of the river during typhoon and monsoon seasons. Prior to the completion of this project, the locality regularly suffered from flooding that affected both residential and agricultural zones. “Our dike now prevents this destruction from happening,” Eduarte stated.

The project, which was completed on June 18, three months ahead of the scheduled completion date of September 24, has not only enhanced the safety of the area but also provided a sense of security to the residents. Consuelo Ermino, a local housewife, expressed profound gratitude for the project. During an interview, she noted that the community now feels much safer, especially during the rainy season. “We, the residents of Barangay Tabi, are very happy. We don’t have fear that every time it rains, it would flood. We are safe now,” she said.

Additionally, the project includes other vital features such as reinforced cement pipe culverts for improved drainage and metal railings for enhanced safety, serving multiple functions beyond flood control. These additions have also benefited the community by providing a safe pathway for senior citizens, health enthusiasts, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) to engage in walking and other physical activities.
