End of ‘Habagat’ Announced by PAGASA, Transition to ‘Amihan’ Expected

MANILA – The Philippine Atmospheric:The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) declared the end of the southwest monsoon season, known locally as “habagat,” and indicated the forthcoming transition to the northeast monsoon, or “amihan,” which is expected to bring colder and drier air in the upcoming months.

According to Philippines News Agency, PAGASA made the announcement late Monday, noting that the transition period to the northeast monsoon will be apparent and officially declared in the coming weeks. The end of the habagat typically marks a significant shift in the weather patterns across the Philippines, influencing various aspects of daily life and local economies.

Meanwhile, despite the conclusion of the habagat season, isolated rain showers are expected across most parts of the country on Tuesday. Specific regions such as the Bicol Region and Quezon will experience scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the influence of easterlies. PAGASA warned that
moderate to heavy rainfall in these areas might trigger flash floods or landslides.

The weather bureau also noted that the easterlies would cause isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, and Aurora. For the rest of the country, localized thunderstorms are expected to lead to isolated rain showers.

In terms of maritime conditions, light to moderate winds and slight to moderate seas will continue to prevail across the archipelago. Additionally, PAGASA mentioned that the low-pressure area last observed 305 kilometers west of Coron, Palawan, is likely to dissipate within the day.
