Escudero Criticizes Vice President Duterte’s Comments on President Marcos

MANILA: The statements made by Vice President Sara Duterte against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family were described as unbecoming by Senate President Francis Escudero. In a statement released over the weekend, Escudero expressed disappointment with Duterte’s comments, which were made during a press conference broadcast on multiple platforms.

According to Philippines News Agency, Escudero criticized Duterte’s remarks, stating that such comments were inappropriate for someone holding the position of the second highest official in the country. During the press conference, Duterte criticized the current administration’s handling of inflation and food security. She also made inflammatory remarks about the President’s family, including a statement about exhuming the remains of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. from the Libingan ng mga Bayani and disposing of them in the West Philippine Sea.

The burial of Marcos Sr. at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in 2016 was authorized by former President Rodrigo
Duterte, the Vice President’s father. He justified the decision by citing Marcos Sr.’s status as a former soldier. Additionally, during the press conference, Vice President Duterte made a controversial remark about decapitating the President.

Escudero suggested that Duterte’s comments may be an expression of frustration related to allegations against her. Despite understanding her possible grievances, Escudero advised Duterte to exercise caution in her public statements. The House of Representatives is currently investigating allegations of misuse of public funds by the Office of the Vice President.

Escudero emphasized the importance of public officials maintaining respect for their positions and avoiding statements that could damage the institutions they represent. He expressed hope that President Marcos and Vice President Duterte would reconcile soon.
