Ex-Baseball Player Oh Jae-won Receives Additional Suspended Sentence for Drug Offenses

Seoul: A former professional baseball player, Oh Jae-won, has been handed an additional suspended prison sentence by a Seoul court on charges related to drug offenses. The court’s decision on Thursday adds to the legal troubles for Oh, who has been embroiled in a series of drug-related charges over the past year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Oh was initially indicted in May for receiving approximately 0.2 grams of methylamphetamine from an acquaintance in November of the previous year. This charge came on top of previous allegations that included consuming methylamphetamine on 11 different occasions and receiving a substantial quantity of Stilnox-a prescription sleeping pill-from nine different acquaintances between 2022 and 2023. These charges earlier resulted in a 2 1/2-year prison sentence, which is currently under appeal.

In a further development, Oh faced new charges earlier this month. These charges involved accusations that he had others, including both former and current baseball players, obtain
prescriptions for Stilnox and Xanax on his behalf on 86 separate occasions. The Seoul Central District Court, emphasizing the severe implications of drug crimes and their societal impact, sentenced Oh to an additional four-month prison term. However, this sentence was suspended for two years, noting the challenges in detecting such offenses and their potential widespread negative repercussions.
