Ex-President Lee’s Brother and Former Assembly Vice Speaker Dies at 89


SEOUL: Lee Sang-deuk, the elder brother of former President Lee Myung-bak and a former vice speaker of South Korea’s National Assembly, has died at the age of 89 after a prolonged battle with a chronic illness, as reported by his acquaintances.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee Sang-deuk had been hospitalized at Seoul National University Hospital at the time of his passing. His memorial has been arranged at Asan Medical Center in southeastern Seoul, where friends and family are expected to pay their respects.

Lee Sang-deuk began his political career by joining the National Assembly in 1988. Over his career, he served six parliamentary terms and held the position of vice speaker from 2006 to 2008. His contributions to South Korean politics spanned several decades, marking a significant chapter in the nation’s legislative history.
