Foreign Ministry Expresses Concern to Russia Over North Korean Troop Deployment in Ukraine

Seoul: The South Korean government officially expressed its concerns to Russia regarding the deployment of North Korean troops to fight alongside Russian forces in Ukraine. This diplomatic action was taken during a meeting with Russia’s top envoy in Seoul.

According to Yonhap News Agency, First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun met with Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev on Monday to voice the South Korean government’s regret over North Korea’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict. The discussion aimed to address the implications of this military cooperation on regional stability and international diplomatic relations.

Ambassador Zinoviev encountered reporters as he exited the ministry and confirmed his meeting with Vice Minister Kim but refrained from commenting further on the discussions.

Further escalating concerns, South Korea’s intelligence service has verified that North Korea dispatched approximately 1,500 soldiers to the Russian Far East earlier in the month to support Russian military efforts in
Ukraine. Reports also indicate plans for additional North Korean troop deployments in the near future, raising alarms over the expanding military collaboration between North Korea and Russia amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
