Former Immigration Employee Arrested for Unlicensed Firearm at DOJ

Manila—A former employee of the Bureau of Immigration (BI), previously dismissed for trust issues and now facing mental health challenges, was arrested for carrying an unlicensed firearm within the Department of Justice (DOJ) compound, announced Justice Secretary Jesus Remulla.

According to Philippines News Agency, the arrest occurred late Tuesday, involving the Manila Police District Station 5. Secretary Remulla detailed that the individual was known within DOJ circles and had exploited this familiarity in previous scams. “The person is obviously a mental case. He knows a lot of persons here and he knows the system very well. He has been dismissed from the service before, which really underscores his problems. He carries a gun but has no license,” Remulla explained in a press briefing.

While the individual’s name has not been disclosed pending further legal proceedings, it was confirmed that he was terminated from his position at the BI in March, after only seven months, due to a loss of trust and confidence.

In light of this incident and other recent controversies, Remulla also mentioned ongoing efforts to bolster security measures within the DOJ compound to safeguard its personnel and the integrity of their work.
