TAIPEI — The former mayor of Taipei and current chairman of the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), Ko Wen-je, was arrested early Saturday morning by Taiwan’s anti-corruption agency amid allegations of corruption related to a major urban redevelopment project. The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into the dealings surrounding the Core Pacific City shopping center.
According to Philippines News Agency, posted on Facebook, Ko Wen-je was taken into custody at 2 a.m. to ensure he remains available for ongoing inquiries. Focus Taiwan reported that Ko, along with three others including Taipei’s deputy mayor and their spouses, were interrogated on Friday. Ko has vehemently denied the accusations, urging authorities to produce evidence to support their claims.
The TPP has strongly criticized the methods used by the prosecutors, including raids on Ko’s residence and party offices, followed by prolonged questioning. The party has voiced full support for Ko, emphasizing his right to due process and calling for a careful judicial review of the arrest’s legality to ensure fairness and justice.
