Gov’t and PPP to Advocate for Special Semiconductor Industry Bill Passage.

Seoul: The government, along with the ruling People Power Party (PPP), has announced plans to advocate for the passage of a special bill supporting the semiconductor industry before the end of the current parliamentary session in December, as stated by a lawmaker on Tuesday. The proposed legislation aims to bolster the semiconductor sector by providing tax, financial, and infrastructure support, and calls for the formation of a specialized committee to oversee the industry’s development. Additionally, during a meeting on Tuesday, government and PPP officials agreed to propose revisions to the criminal code. These revisions aim to outlaw “public threats” and the carrying of weapons in public, with the intention of curbing random and unprovoked violent crimes, according to Rep. Kim Sang-hoon, the PPP’s top policymaker.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Rep. Kim Sang-hoon mentioned during a briefing that an exchange of legislative proposals between the ruling and opposition parties is anticipated to take place e
ither on Friday or the following Monday. The senior deputy floor leaders of the two parties will coordinate this exchange, after which each standing committee will independently review and make decisions on the proposed bills. The legislative agenda also includes a bill focused on ensuring a stable power supply for the chip and other advanced industries, a proposal to extend tax credits for technologies employed by these sectors, and a bill aimed at promoting the artificial intelligence industry.

In addition to these measures, the government and the PPP have reached an agreement to initiate steps towards abolishing a law that prohibits mobile carriers from offering excessive discounts to customers. The overall objective is to finalize these initiatives and secure the passage of the bills before the conclusion of the current parliamentary session on December 9.
