Ha Jung-woo Emerges as a Prolific Artist with New Exhibition in Seoul

SEOUL: South Korean actor and painter Ha Jung-woo, renowned for his cinematic contributions, is now making significant inroads in the art world with a new solo exhibition at Seoul’s prestigious Hakgojae Gallery. The exhibition titled “Never Tell Anybody Outside the Family” showcases 35 of his new artworks, all created in 2024, drawing from diverse inspirations including Moroccan environments and traditional Korean masks.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Ha Jung-woo, at a press event, shared insights into his artistic journey and the new directions in his work. Famously known for his acting, Ha has been painting since his early 20s, finding in it a consistent source of comfort and expression akin to his acting career. His first solo exhibition was held in 2010, and since then, he has evolved his artistic style, now presenting a collection that marks a departure from his earlier portrait series known for their bold colors and raw beauty.

The actor-turned-artist described his approach to art as intuitive and r
eflective of his life experiences. He recounted the significant impact of his five-month stay in Morocco, which not only inspired several pieces in the current exhibition but also allowed him to integrate these experiences onto the canvas naturally. His new works showcase a mix of portraits, geometric-patterned rugs, and traditional Korean masks, indicating a broadening of his artistic repertoire.

Ha, who has never undergone formal art training, explained how he developed his painting skills through self-education, including studying documentaries and films about artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Henri Matisse. Despite facing criticism for his self-taught approach and the unconventional nature of his work, Ha remains undeterred, citing the “10,000-hour rule” as a basis for his continued dedication to his craft.

As he progresses in his artistic career, Ha’s focus is not on immediate recognition but on the continual development of his work, hoping that by his 70s, his art will be given a closer look and p
ossibly more appreciation. For now, his latest exhibition stands as a testament to his evolving artistic expression and the unique blend of his life’s experiences conveyed through his paintings.
