Iconic Korean Actress Kim Soo-mi Passes Away at 75


SEOUL: Korean veteran actress Kim Soo-mi, renowned for her role as a single village mother in the long-running drama series “Country Diaries,” died of cardiac arrest at age 75. Her portrayal captivated audiences for over two decades, marking a significant chapter in Korean television history.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim was discovered unconscious at her residence by her son and was transported to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, where she was declared dead upon arrival. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Kim Soo-mi’s illustrious career began on MBC TV in 1971, leading to her participation in numerous television series and films. Her role in “Country Diaries” brought her widespread acclaim, particularly for her ability to convincingly portray an elderly woman while in her 30s. This performance earned her the Grand Prize at the 1986 MBC Drama Awards.

acing roles with bold and forthright personalities. Her recent work includes a role in the comedy film “Marrying the Mafia: Returns,” released in 2023, where she played the matriarch of a gang family.

Beyond acting, Kim appeared in several reality TV programs, notably tvN’s “Mother’s Touch: Korean Side Dishes,” which highlighted her culinary talents. In May, she was hospitalized for fatigue and had been taking a temporary break from her professional commitments.

Kim Soo-mi leaves behind a legacy as a pioneering figure in Korean television, remembered for her dynamic performances and significant contributions to the entertainment industry.
