Iloilo City Government Implements Shortened Work Hours for Family Time

ILOILO CITY — In a move to promote family unity and wellness among its employees, the Iloilo City government announced a shortened work schedule on Monday. Officials stated the early dismissal aims to give staff more quality time with their families, aligning with national observations of family values and community wellness.

According to Philippines News Agency, the spokesperson for Mayor Jerry Treñas, Joy Fantilaga, communicated during an interview that all city government employees were encouraged to take advantage of this initiative. “We believe that we need to uphold values of family, unity, and service in all that we do,” Fantilaga remarked. Employees were dismissed from their duties at 3 p.m., although essential services such as health, disaster preparedness, and response were maintained to ensure continuity.

The policy is in accordance with Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 64, issued by the Office of the President, which supports Proclamation No. 60, series of 1992. This proclamation established the fourth Monday of September each year as “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga” Day, a day dedicated to celebrating and emphasizing the importance of family meals and togetherness. Fantilaga also advised the public to plan their transactions with government offices around the early closure to avoid inconveniences.

In related developments, Cebu City also marked the occasion with statements and activities led by Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia, underscoring the role of the family in fostering a healthy community as part of the 32nd National Family Week and Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day. Garcia highlighted the city government’s commitment to promoting family values and supporting programs aimed at enhancing the well-being of families in Cebu.
