Intramuros Celebrates Fiesta Hispano-Filipino, Honoring Cultural Ties and Devotion

MANILA – The Fiesta Hispano-Filipino in Intramuros showcased a vibrant celebration of Spanish influence on Filipino culture and the devout Filipino reverence for the Blessed Virgin Mary, aligning with the month-long Fiesta de Intramuros.

According to Philippines News Agency, the event honored Nuestra Señora de la Consolación y Correa, the patroness of the historic walled city, emphasizing the deep historical connections between Spain and the Philippines. Attendees enjoyed performances of traditional Filipino folk songs like ‘Leron Leron Sinta’ and ‘Kalesa’, as well as classic Spanish tracks including ‘Hasta La Eternidad’ and ‘Bésame Mucho’.

The cultural evening was notably attended by Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Miguel Utray and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, who has been invited to act as ‘hermana mayor’ for next year’s festival. Secretary Christina Frasco of the Department of Tourism highlighted the lasting impact of Spanish culture on Filipino life, from language and cuisine to the tradition of festive celebrations, in a speech delivered by Undersecretary Rica Bueno.

The Intramuros Administration and San Agustin Church, organizers of the event, plan to make the Fiesta de Intramuros and Fiesta Hispano-Filipino annual events. Fr. Edwin Hari OSA, rector of the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, emphasized that the celebrations are not just about promoting Intramuros as a destination but also deepening the Catholic faithful’s devotion to Mary. He expressed the importance of the devotion to Our Lady of Consolation as a source of comfort to those facing life’s challenges.

The celebrations this year also set the stage for the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Canonical Coronation of the image of Our Lady of Consolation in September 2025, which is housed in the San Agustin Church.
