Japanese Government Donates P300-M Farm Machinery to Bolster Philippine Sugar Industry

MANILA – The Philippine sugar industry is set to experience a significant boost in production with the recent acquisition of approximately PHP300 million (800 million yen) worth of farm machinery. This generous donation from the Japanese government is aimed at aiding small sugarcane farmers across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, marking a pivotal moment in the industry’s development.

According to Philippines News Agency, the machinery was officially handed over by Jumpei Tachikawa, Agriculture Attaché from the Embassy of Japan. The event was attended by key figures including Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and SRA Administrator Pablo Luis Azcona. This donation falls under the Japan Non-Project Grant Aid initiative, showcasing a strong collaborative effort between the two nations.

The farm equipment includes 80 tractors, 48 sugar planters, five power harrows, and 48 lateral flail mowers. The distribution of these tools, especially the 80 tractors, is primarily focused on the Visayas region, notably in Negros Occidental, the country’s leading sugar-producing province.

Secretary Laurel expressed his gratitude towards Mr. Tachikawa and highlighted the importance of modernizing Philippine agriculture. He emphasized that this initiative is a significant step towards meeting the goals set by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for more affordable and accessible food items. Laurel also noted the strengthening trade partnership between the Philippines and Japan, benefiting both nations.

Administrator Azcona referred to the Japanese government’s donation as a substantial aid in making the Philippine sugar industry globally competitive. He stressed the necessity of mechanization for farmers to keep pace with global standards.

Beneficiaries like Exequiel Marañon, a sugarcane planter from the Sagay City-based Option Multi-Purpose Cooperative, expressed optimism that this support would greatly reduce land preparation costs. He anticipates a substantial increase in production by the next year, particularly benefiting small farmers.

In conclusion, this initiative by the Japanese government is more than just a donation of farm machinery; it represents a significant step towards modernizing the Philippine sugar industry, fostering international cooperation, and supporting small-scale farmers in their endeavors to be more efficient and competitive.
