Key Shelter Agency Halts Payments for Storm Kristine Victims

MANILA: The Social Housing Finance Corp. (SHFC), an essential shelter agency in the Philippines, has announced a temporary pause on monthly payments for national housing beneficiaries impacted by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine. This measure aims to alleviate financial burdens for affected families as they recover from the storm.

According to Philippines News Agency, Federico Laxa, president and chief executive officer of SHFC, stated in a Bagong Pilipinas interview that the moratorium is intended to support those struggling with expenses in the aftermath of the calamity. SHFC, operating under the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, is also coordinating relief efforts, providing aid to areas hit by Kristine. While there are no current statistics on the number of affected individuals, Laxa noted that the agency previously assisted 3,000 to 4,000 victims of Typhoon Carina in Metro Manila.

The SHFC plays a significant role in the Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino Program (4PH), focusing on
vertical housing projects. Over the last two decades, the agency has supported more than 470,000 families with over PHP35 billion in assistance. Laxa mentioned that 12 projects are ongoing, with some units scheduled for delivery to beneficiaries before Christmas.

In San Fernando, Pampanga, one building has been completed, and efforts are underway to finish three more, ensuring timely delivery to local residents. Additionally, four of the 14 buildings in Davao City have been completed, and approximately 400 families are expected to receive their housing units before the holiday season.
