Leptospirosis Cases Surge by 16% in 2023, Health Department Reports


MANILA: The Department of Health (DOH) has reported a significant increase in leptospirosis cases in the Philippines, with 5,835 cases documented from January 1 to October 5, marking a 16 percent rise compared to the same period last year, when 5,050 cases were recorded.

According to Philippines News Agency, there was a notable surge in new cases from September 8 to 21, with 774 cases reported, nearly doubling the 381 cases documented from August 25 to September 7. The DOH highlighted that, with the exception of Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Soccsksargen, and Caraga, all regions have experienced an increase in leptospirosis cases over the recent weeks leading up to October 5.

Despite the rise in cases, the number of deaths attributed to leptospirosis has decreased. The DOH reported 509 deaths thus far, an 11 percent decrease from the 570 deaths recorded during the same period last year. Health officials are urging the public to take precautions as more rains are anticipated. Recommended measures inclu
