LG Energy Solution and Stellantis Launch EV Battery Production in Canada


TORONTO: South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution Ltd. and global automaker Stellantis N.V. have commenced production of battery modules in Canada through their joint venture, NextStar Energy. This marks a significant advancement in their collaborative efforts to bolster electric vehicle infrastructure in North America.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the companies initially revealed plans in early 2022 to establish an electric vehicle battery plant in Ontario under the NextStar Energy banner. The facility is expected to reach an annual production capacity of 49.5 gigawatt hours, sufficient to power approximately 450,000 vehicles each year.

While battery module production has begun, the manufacturing of battery cells at the Ontario plant is slated to start next year upon the completion of the facility’s construction. In a statement, NextStar Energy highlighted the commencement of module production as a crucial milestone, underscoring the joint venture’s dedication to leading the North American
battery technology and production sector.

LG Energy Solution currently operates seven battery cell plants across the globe, with locations in South Korea, Poland, China, Indonesia, and three in the United States.
