Lions’ Kim Hun-gon Seeks Redemption Following Teammate’s Injury

GWANGJU: The Samsung Lions’ hitter Kim Hun-gon is stepping up his game in the Korean Baseball Organization postseason, motivated by the absence of his injured teammate, veteran left-hander Baek Jung-hyun. Baek was sidelined earlier this month after sustaining injuries from a line drive hit by Kim during a scrimmage, leaving the pitcher with a broken right thumb and a bruised left eye.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Baek’s unexpected absence has pushed Kim to elevate his performance on the field. Kim has expressed a heightened sense of responsibility to play in honor of Baek, who has been a teammate since 2011. Kim’s efforts have translated into success, including a crucial solo home run against the Tigers’ starter, James Naile, during the Korean Series’ first game, which was eventually postponed due to rain.

Kim’s recent power surge is notable, given his modest regular-season output of nine home runs over 117 games. He also contributed significantly during the second round against the LG Twins, hitting tw
o home runs in a decisive 10-5 victory. The injury incident initially rattled Kim, but Baek’s positive attitude and reassurance have helped ease Kim’s concerns.

Baek has continued to support Kim despite his injuries, maintaining regular communication and offering advice, including recommending meditation to help Kim focus. Kim’s determination to perform well for Baek underscores the strong bond between the teammates and the impact of their relationship on his current postseason efforts.
