Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Hits Off Kamchatka Peninsula


KAMCHATKA — A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula late Saturday, with local authorities reporting minimal damage and no tsunami warnings issued.



According to Philippines News Agency, the earthquake had a preliminary intensity of 6.0 in the regional administrative center of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The report was confirmed by the local branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which monitored the seismic activity.



Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov provided further details, noting that while an active aftershock process is currently underway, scientists assess the likelihood of another significant tremor as low. The regional department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry has confirmed that no tsunami alert has been issued in the wake of the quake.
