Marcos Reaffirms Support for Peace and Denuclearization of Korean Peninsula


Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to peace, stability, and denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula during the ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit in Vientiane, Laos. The summit, held on Thursday, marked the 35th anniversary of dialogue relations between ASEAN and South Korea.



According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippines continues to support efforts toward maintaining regional peace, particularly through initiatives aimed at maritime safety, security, and environmental protection. He commended South Korea’s “Audacious Initiative” and the “August 15 Unification Doctrine,” encouraging the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to engage constructively and adhere to international law.



Marcos welcomed the ASEAN-ROK Comprehensive Strategic Partner initiative, noting that it will strengthen collaboration on a range of issues. He also praised South Korea’s contributions to skills development in the region, particularly through the ASEAN-ROK Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for ASEAN Mobility (TEAM) Project, which focuses on improving resilience in technological advancements, digitalization, health emergencies, and climate change.



In the area of trade, Marcos stressed the importance of reviewing and upgrading the ASEAN-Korea Free Trade Agreement (AKFTA) to enhance market access and economic partnerships. He highlighted the need for the agreement to support inclusive growth and create opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the region.
