MIAA Cuts 844 Positions Following NAIA Privatization

MANILA-The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has abolished 844 plantilla positions in the aftermath of the privatization of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA):he Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has abolished 844 plantilla positions in the aftermath of the privatization of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), transitioning most of these roles to the new management entity, New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC), which officially took over operations on September 14.

According to Philippines News Agency, the restructuring move by MIAA, which now serves as a regulatory body, is pending approval from the Governance Commission for GOCCs (GCG) for its new organizational structure. Chris Bendijo, head executive assistant at MIAA, noted that the authority had originally requested approval for 1,463 positions in its proposed structure. However, there is uncertainty about when GCG will deliver its decision. ‘We have no way of determining that but GCG has committed to expedite their
review of the MIAA restructuring plan,’ Bendijo stated.

Prior to the privatization, MIAA had 1,984 plantilla posts approved by the Department of Budget and Management. The proposed restructuring aims to streamline operations and enhance MIAA’s capacity as a regulator, effectively overseeing the development and progress at NAIA. MIAA emphasized that the shift to a public-private partnership model would allow it to concentrate on essential government functions and safeguard national interests.

In a recent statement, MIAA expressed optimism about NNIC’s future development plans for NAIA. Meanwhile, MIAA General Manager Eric Ines urged the remaining employees to support the organization’s new regulatory role. The institution also conducted a two-day workshop with the Asian Development Bank to help representatives understand their new responsibilities and to facilitate MIAA’s smooth transition to regulatory functions.
