National Security Adviser Warns North Korea Against War, Cites Mutual Destruction

SEOUL: National Security Adviser Shin Won-sik emphasized that North Korea would only initiate war as an act of suicide, highlighting the strength of South Korea’s military and the robustness of its alliance with the United States. Shin’s remarks come amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, where the unresolved status from the 1950-53 Korean War continues to cast long shadows over regional stability.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Shin articulated these views during a recent briefing at the presidential office in Yongsan, Seoul. He underscored the perpetual threat North Korea poses, a legacy of the Korean War that ended only with an armistice. “The possibility of North Korea waging a war has always existed ever since the Korean War,” Shin stated, adding that the deterrence lies not just in intention but in South Korea’s readiness and collective resolve.

Shin further stressed the importance of South Korea’s military capabilities in deterring North Korean provocations. He highlighted the strategic sign
ificance of the South Korea-U.S. alliance, describing it as “robust” and crucial for maintaining regional peace. Additionally, Shin pointed to the recent unveiling of the Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile, which has notably increased tensions with the North. The missile, presented during the Oct. 1 Armed Forces Day military parade, is seen as a significant enhancement to South Korea’s defensive arsenal.

The adviser also addressed recent accusations from North Korea regarding the alleged incursion of South Korean drones into its territory. Shin advised a non-committal response to avoid internal discord within South Korea, suggesting that addressing these accusations would only play into North Korea’s strategy to stir instability.

Shin’s comments reflect a deep-seated concern about the potential for conflict, but also a confidence in the preventive measures established by South Korea and its allies. The ongoing military enhancements and strategic alliances are portrayed as pivotal in maintaining a balance of power
on the Korean Peninsula.
