Pyongyang: North Korea announced on Friday that it had successfully test-fired the new Hwasong-19 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) the day prior. The country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, declared that this achievement has secured an “irreversible hegemonic position” in the development of nuclear delivery systems.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the test was described as “crucial” and marked a significant milestone in maintaining the “absolute superiority” of North Korea’s armed forces. The South Korean military detected the missile launch at approximately 7:10 a.m. from Pyongyang, noting that it traveled about 1,000 kilometers before landing in the East Sea. The missile was assessed as a new solid-fuel ICBM.
This launch, the first of its kind in nearly a year, occurred just days before the U.S. presidential election on November 5. Observers suggested that the timing was a strategic move by North Korea to demonstrate its capability to deliver a nuclear warhead to the U.S. mainland, while diverting attent
ion from international criticism of its military support to Russia.
North Korea has labeled the Hwasong-19 as an “ultra-powerful offensive means” and the “ultimate” version of its long-range missile series. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the test showcased the advancement of North Korea’s strategic missile capabilities and demonstrated the reliability of its strategic deterrent.
Kim Jong-un expressed satisfaction with the test results, affirming that North Korea’s position in developing nuclear delivery systems is “absolutely irreversible.” The Hwasong-19, along with the Hwasong-18, is expected to serve as the primary defense mechanism against enemy threats, illustrating North Korea’s “counteraction will.”
The missile’s flight was notable for its duration and altitude, with North Korea claiming it traveled 1,001.2 kilometers, reached a maximum altitude of 7,687.5 kilometers, and flew for 5,156 seconds. Analysts have speculated that North Korea may have received advanced technical suppo
rt from Russia, potentially in exchange for backing Moscow’s military actions.
State media images showed the missile being launched from an 11-axle transporter erector launcher, with Kim’s daughter, Ju-ae, present during the inspection. The missile’s design, including a more rounded warhead section, suggests the possibility of multiple warhead deployment to enhance its strike capability.
Seoul’s unification ministry assessed that the launch was intended to exert pressure on the U.S. ahead of its presidential election. Deputy spokesperson Kim In-ae condemned the launch as a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, labeling it a “clear provocation” to regional security.
