North Korea’s Military Focus May Accelerate Its Collapse, Warns South Korea’s Foreign Minister

SEOUL: South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul has issued a stern warning about North Korea’s increased focus on military expansion, suggesting that such priorities could lead to the regime’s rapid downfall. This statement comes amidst heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, following North Korea’s destructive actions towards cross-border roads and aggressive rhetoric towards Seoul.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Foreign Minister Cho emphasized the potential consequences of North Korea’s military policies during a business event in Seoul. He criticized North Korea for ignoring the plight of its people while expanding its military capabilities, including nuclear weapons and missiles. “North Korea must clearly realize that concentrating solely on expanding its military power, while turning a blind eye on the suffering of its own people, is a fast track to its downfall,” Cho stated.

The recent actions by North Korea, including the destruction of cross-border roads, have escalated tensions and reduced
the possibility of dialogue. Cho expressed disappointment over these developments, labeling them as regressive steps that erase inter-Korean history. Despite these challenges, he reaffirmed South Korea’s commitment to pursuing unification and responding firmly to any provocations from the North.

Additionally, Cho addressed relations with Russia, indicating that the future of bilateral ties would depend on Moscow’s actions. He assured that efforts would continue to protect South Korean nationals and businesses in Russia and to maintain stable relations.

The situation on the Korean Peninsula remains tense, with little indication of imminent improvement, as North Korea continues to prioritize military expansion over dialogue and cooperation.
