Over 2,000 Schools in Western Visayas Suspend Classes Due to Tropical Storm Kristine


ILOILO CITY: A total of 2,253 public schools in the Western Visayas region have transitioned to an alternative delivery mode for classes as Tropical Storm Kristine brings inclement weather, prompting local government units to suspend face-to-face classes. This precautionary measure affects approximately 982,359 learners, ensuring their safety amidst forecasts of moderate to heavy rainfall.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of Education’s regional information officer, Hernani Escullar Jr., confirmed that the suspensions were declared by local government units in response to adverse weather conditions. The most significant number of school closures occurred in Negros Occidental, with 663 schools affected, followed by Antique with 512 schools, and Capiz with 447. Other affected areas include Iloilo province with 419 schools, Bacolod City with 70, Roxas City with 50, Aklan with 26, and Iloilo City with 66.

cational levels in both public and private institutions by the afternoon. Acting Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon endorsed the recommendation from the Iloilo City Emergency Operations Center to prioritize safety.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued Weather Advisory No. 6, forecasting moderate to heavy rains and advising the public to remain indoors and keep abreast of official weather updates.
