Overcrowded Conditions at Pasig City Jail Highlighted by Arrival of Former Mayor Alice Guo

PASIG CITY-Former Bamban:ormer Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo will become the 45th occupant of a detention cell in the Pasig City Jail female dormitory, originally built for only nine detainees. Guo, who is set to be transferred to the facility on Monday, is facing charges in a high-profile human trafficking case. The cell’s overcrowded conditions reflect a broader issue at the jail, where the female dormitory currently houses 135 detainees, despite having a capacity for only 36.

According to Philippines News Agency, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) spokesperson Supt. Jayrex Bustinera discussed the preparations underway for Guo’s transfer from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City. Enhanced security measures and a special response team have been arranged to ensure Guo’s safety. “We had special arrangement for security. We provided additional personnel. We tightened our security because of her,” Bustinera explained. The team, composed of female jail offi
cers, will also accompany Guo during her court hearings.

Bustinera assured that despite the overcrowded conditions, the cell slated for Guo is well-maintained, featuring an industrial fan and a comfort room. The BJMP has also conducted a background check on her would-be cellmates to ensure they are not considered high risk or violent. The Pasig Regional Trial Court had ordered Guo’s transfer after finding probable cause for her trial in a non-bailable case of human trafficking. Her legal team plans to file a petition to post bail before her arraignment scheduled for September 27.

The intended transfer on Friday was delayed due to incomplete documentary requirements, highlighting potential administrative issues within the judicial process.
